Periodontitis is a common chronic inflammatory disease characterised by the destruction of the supporting structures of the teeth (periodontal ligament and alveolar bone). Diabetes Mellitus is characterized by hyperglycemia. Studies have shown that diabetes is one of the major risk factors for the development of periodontitis and which has been shown to be increased threefold in people with diabetes. It catalyses the interconversion of lactate and pyruvate. The study was aimed at assessing comparative evaluation of Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) enzyme activity in saliva of periodontitis patients with or without diabetes. The Periodontitis patients were grouped into two groups as Diabetic and Non-Diabetic and their blood sugar level was analysed. Their unstimulated saliva was collected and salivary LDH was analysed by spectrophotometric analysis as per manufacturer’s instructions and results were analyzed statistically. Results of the study showed that the LDH level was found to be significantly increased in both the group studied. However, the LDH level was significantly higher (p<0.05) in periodontitis patients with diabetes (450 ± 13.45 U/L) when compared to nondiabetic patients with periodontitis (450 ± 13.45 U/L). It is evident that there is an increased salivary LDH levels in periodontitis patients with diabetes as compared to periodontitis patients without diabetes. Our present finding concludes that salivary LDH is a non-invasive method and can be used as a bio-marker for the diagnosis of periodontitis associated with diabetic complications.
