Basic life support (BLS) is the principle for saving lives following cardiac arrest. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) invented in 1960, is a simple but effective procedure that allows almost anyone to sustain life in the early critical minutes after cardiac and respiratory arrest. Life threatening emergencies may occur at any time. As health professionals, dentists should also be acquainted with adequate knowledge of basic life support to competently handle emergencies, which may occur at any time. The study population with 106 participants, consisted of 1st and 2nd year dental students. The survey instrument employed was a self- administered questionnaire comprising 15 multiple choice questions. The questionnaire assessed the basic theoretical and practical knowledge regarding BLS. The data was collected and analysed statistically using SPSS software. 50% of study participants were aware of BLS. And 51 % of 2nd year dental students were more aware of BLS and CPR when compared to 1st year dental students. The study concludes that awareness should be increased among the dental students. This study emphasises the need for all health care professionals to regularly update the knowledge and skills regarding BLS.
