Inside the cranial cavity there are about a pair of transverse sulcus which are located on either side of internal occipital protuberance. This depression is present in posterior cranial fossa which lodges the right and left transverse sinuses . The transverse sinuses are located bilaterally in the tentorium cerebelli. It forms as an attachment into the occipital bone transporting venous blood from the confluence of sinuses to the left and right sigmoid sinuses. The knowledge of transverse sulcus is important to know about dural venous sinus. It will be useful for neurosurgeons during surgical procedures. The aim of the study is to evaluate the morphometric analysis of transverse sulcus in posterior cranial fossa. About 50 dry human skulls were used for the study obtained from the Department of Anatomy , Saveetha Dental College , Chennai. The transverse sulcus of both right and left sides were observed. The length of the transverse sulcus of both sides and the distance between the foramen magnum and the lateral angle of transverse sulcus were measured. The mean value value for length of transverse sulcus was 3.42cm and 3.14cm on right and left sides respectively. The mean value for the distance between the foramen magnum and lateral angle of transverse sulcus was 3.32cm and 3.15cm on right and left respectively. The right transverse sulcus is longer than the left transverse sulcus in the first two measurements. The measurements which were taken will be useful clinically and for the neurosurgeons to avoid misdiagnosis.
