Crown lengthening is a procedure that has been practised since a very long time for the restoration of clinically short crowns. Irrespective of the technique, frequently biologic width violation has been noticed which may be due to lack of knowledge & practice pertaining to case selection, presurgical assessment etc for crown lengthening with most of the general dental practitioners. Thus this study aims to assess the knowledge and practice of crown lengthening among general dental practitioners. A total of 128 practitioners with a minimum of 1 year clinical dental practice experience and age ranging between 23 and 55 years and willing to study were included in the study. A structured questionnaire containing 19 questions related to the case selection, assessment, techniques available for crown lengthening procedure was given to the practitioners. The results show that there is a lack of in-depth knowledge about the factors to be considered and pre-surgical assessment before crown lengthening procedure and also in the selection of appropriate technique. Thus continuing dental education programs and workshops regarding crown lengthening procedure among general dental practitioners are required and mandatory to plan proper prosthetic rehabilitations without violating the periodontal health.
