Confidence Levels/ Knowledge of Crri In Saveetha Dental College in Diagnosing and Treating Common Oral Mucosal and Facial Pain Cases in Private Practice.

Abstract: Oral medicine is dental speciality dealing primarily in diagnosis and non- surgical management of facial pain, salivary gland disease, TMJ pathology, oral mucosal lesions and oral changes due to systemic disorders. Correct diagnosis will lead to correct therapy. Thus this study aims to assess the confidence levels and knowledge of junior residents in dental college in diagnosing and treating common oral mucosal and facial pain cases in private practice.A questionnaire survey was conducted amongst junior residents of saveetha dental college. A total of 96 students had participated in the survey, of which 77 were females and 19 were males.88.5%(n=85) of them perform a thorough examination of oral cavity, complete habit history was recorded by 94.7% (n=91) and 42.7% (n=41) experiences difficulty in diagnosing these lesion. Knowledge about biopsy techniques was seen in 77%(n=74) and 13.5% (n=13) were able to perform biopsies and 61.4%(n=59) have attempted to treat these lesions 38.6%(n=37) .A proper pain history is taken by 76%(n=73) and complete examination of orofacial region is done by 56%(n=54). 38.5%(n=37) had knowledge appropriate radiographs, 35.4% were able to treat these disorders while 64.6% were unable to treat.Thus this study concludes that a routine systematic approach and proper examination technique should be inculcated in students in order to help them detect and diagnose oral mucosal and facial pain disorders. A correct diagnosis is what will serve as the key to proper management of the condition thereby providing adequate level of care to patients and relieving them from pain and discomfort.
