Oral health care in pregnancy is often avoided and misunderstood by physicians, dentists, and patients. Evidence-based practice guidelines are still being developed. Research suggests that some prenatal oral conditions may have adverse consequences for the child. Periodontitis is associated with preterm birth and low birth weight, and high levels of cariogenic bacteria in mothers can lead to increased dental caries in the infant. Periodontitis is a destructive inflammation of the periodontium affecting approximately 30 percent of women of child- bearing age. The aim of the study was to assess the knowledge and awareness regarding periodontal disease among pregnant women. A 10-item questionnaire was formulated and circulated among 86 pregnant women who reported to Saveetha Dental College and Hospitals, Chennai for dental treatment. The responses were subjected to statistical analysis using SPSS software, Version 20. Frequency distribution and percentage were calculated. On analysis of data it was observed that nearly 68.6% of the women were unaware that pregnancy could lead to periodontal diseases and nearly 74.4% of them were unaware of the complications of pregnancy periodontitis. From this study, we can conclude that there was a lack of knowledge regarding the importance of maintaining oral hygiene among pregnant women and further awareness must be imparted.
