Dysmenorrhoea is a common gynecological condition among females in their reproductive years characterised by painful menstrual cramps of uterine origin. The currently available information on dysmenorrhoea in university students in Chennai is limited. This study aims to assess the prevalence of dysmenorrhea, associated menstrual symptoms and their self-management techniques among female university students in Chennai. This cross-sectional study was conducted at Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences (SIMATS), Chennai on a total of 105 students aged between 18 and 32 years. A self-administrated questionnaire was used to collect data. More than half of the respondents (54.29%) suffered from dysmenorrhea. Severe pain was reported by (15.8%) respondents. 75.4% of the respondents resorted to bed-rest for pain relief. Only 7% of the respondents reported consulting a doctor for dysmenorrhea. Mood swings were the most common symptom experienced by the students and were significantly high among those with dysmenorrhea. Even though dysmenorrhea is common and may not be associated with any underlying pathology, very few students seek medical advice. Further extensive studies to increase their awareness can help in alleviating the burden associated with this common gynecological condition.
