Most pulp and periapical diseases are a result of bacterial ingress and percolation within the tooth and the root canal system. If this is to be avoided, the tooth in treatment should be retained in the mouth in its normal anatomic, functional and aesthetic state. This largely improves the prognosis of the tooth and ease of operability amid appointments. Hence, temporarily restoring the tooth amid and during treatment is of key importance. Several concepts have been studied over the years, These are based on clinical understanding that the tooth must be able to continue functioning physiologically, the operator must have adequate access to the root canal system and the patient must be able to maintain normal oral hygiene to prevent caries and the retention of plaque and calculus. Several techniques such as direct technique and indirect direct technique have also been studied and used extensively in clinical practice. Additionally, newer methods such as vacuum formed dyes, preformed crowns and matrix buttons have also been used. The aim of the present study was to explore the various methods, materials and strategies at provisionally restoring single or multiple teeth undergoing endodontic treatment.
