Survey on knowledge and attitude and awareness about basic life support and emergency Medical Services among B.D.S interns in Andhra Pradesh hospitals- A kap survey

Abstract: Road traffic accidents and sudden cardiac arrest are one of the slackening causes of death in Andhra Pradesh . Basic life support is lifesaving intervention as a pre medical and paramedical facility. Adequate knowledge and awareness about Basic life support and cardiopulmonary resuscitation are mandatory for healthcare students so that they are very helpful in emergency situations. Aim: The aim of the present study is to assess the knowledge, awareness and attitude towards basic life support among BDS interns in different university hospitals across Andhra Pradesh. Materials and Methods: A total of 452 interns from the Dental colleges / University Hospitals across Andhra Pradesh participated in the study. A self-explanatory questionnaire, comprising 13 questions, was designed for the study and students were given the option of selecting one of answers. Result: Out of 452subjects, 233completed the survey .The males to females sex distribution in the entire group of respondents was 94[40.34%] and 139[59.66%] . Female participants revealed a significantly higher awareness score than male students. 84.98% .From this study we observed that at least BLS Training should be included in the University curriculum for BDS Interns.. Conclusion: Among the survey participants of the study, overall awareness score was average, whereas the knowledge score was below average. Further, the participants showed a positive attitude towards BLS training. An optimistic decision should be considered on the inclusion of Basic Life Support procedures and training in the university curriculum for Dental Undergraduates.
