Knowledge and awareness of pneumonia among parents - a questionnaire-based study

Author: , SHIFA JAWAHAR ALI, DR. PREETHA S, DR. JEEVITHA M, DR. LAVANYA PRATHAP
Abstract: Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs caused by pathogenic organisms. The symptoms of this disease include difficulty in breathing, cough, chest pain, fever, chills, confusion in elderly people. The alveoli of the lungs get filled with fluid which interferes with breathing. Pneumonia is a contagious disease and it gets transmitted from one person to another through droplets released by coughing or sneezing from the infected person. Habits such as cigarette smoking, drug and alcohol abuse can increase the risk for the disease. Children below five years have a higher risk to get infected hence parents should be aware about it. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the knowledge and awareness of pneumonia among parents. A questionnaire consisting of 12 questions were framed based on knowledge and awareness of pneumonia using an online survey platform. The link was shared to 100 parents. The questions were carefully studied and corresponding answers were tabulated and statistically analysed. 86% of the parents were aware about pneumonia and 14 % lacked the basic knowledge about pneumonia. 52% of the parents were aware about the symptoms of pneumonia, 35% of them were partially aware and 13% were completely not aware. The awareness about pneumonia among parents is convincing but there is still a small group of parents who are not aware. Children are more prone to this disease. Parents are responsible for taking care of children below 5 years as they will not be able to take care of themselves . Hence awareness should be more among parents.
