AIM: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the pain experienced by the patient during LA administration, onset of anesthesia and success of anesthesia using the Vazirani Akinosi and Gow Gates techniques. MATERIALS AND METHOD: The study involves 40 subjects who underwent posterior mandibular bilateral extractions, divided into two different groups, a split mouth trial each receiving Gow Gates, Vazirani Akinosi nerve blocks. The variables evaluated were onset of anesthesia and pain experienced by patient during a particular technique and also the success of anesthesia by evaluating any supplemental injections were required for a particular technique. RESULTS:Among the 40 patients who underwent extractions in a split mouth trial,Number of patients who experienced pain at the time of LA administration were, mild pain -25,moderate pain-11 and severe pain-4 due to vazirani akinosi technique.Number of patients who experienced mild pain-12,moderate pain-23 and severe pain-5 due to gow gates techniqueCONCLUSION: The Vazirani Akinosi technique was found to be signi?cantly better than Gow gates technique with respect to both onset and pain during administration of LA experienced by patient, while the success of anesthesia was more significant with gow gates technique.
