Smells of Nature Reduces Stress And Creates Positivity – A Review

Author: DR SRIDEVI.G
Abstract: Olfaction being one of the weakest special senses of mankind, but still we are able to recognize thousands of different smells and able to detect odors in infinite quantities also This sense has the potential to influence the mental health of a person. The olfactory system has a very intimate relationship with brain. Inhalation of essential oils are prepared aromatherapy by distillation using plant extracts to maintain the characteristic odor of the original plant and flowers. Such preparations as rosemary, lavender and peppermint etc have profound implications in mood disorders. Exposure to nature influences the human heart and brain through our five senses sight, smell and sound, taste and touch and poses many benefits to human health. Smell of fragrance improves mind, induces calmness and possibly influences mother child interactions. Smell of nature influences the brain and reduces stress and anxiety related to occupational stress. Nature is abounded with smell of flowers, plants, trees, shrubs, grasses, animals and insects etc and they create the sense of pleasure. Presence of phytoncides emitted by plants diffusely penetrate in the air around natural environments and forms the basis of forest bathing techniques. This therapy is reported to depress the central nervous system promote sleep and decrease anxiety levels created by stress. Air ions are positively or negatively charged particles present in air around nature in forests and waterfalls. These ions are suggested to have potential benefits on human physiology and emotions. This association between smells of nature and stress relief and positivity is attributed to the relay of olfactory impulses to the hypothalamus, amygdala and limbic system.
