Greater palatine foramen (GPF) represents the inferior opening of the greater palatine canal, positioned posteriorly in hard palate, on the palatal aspect in between the maxillary 2nd and 3rd molars or medial to the maxillary 3rd molar. Accurately locating GPF is required while doing maxillary nerve block for surgeries like periodontal flap, maxillary sinus, cleft palate, free gingival grafts and to avoid complications associated with injury to the vital structures. The aim of this study was to assess the GPF position in the South Indian population using CBCT. Out of 100 CBCTs collected from the radiology department, only 30 CBCTs (18 females and 12 males) met the inclusion criteria and were used for assessment using the Galileos software on a personal computer. The location of the GPF in relation to mid palatine suture was measured and the results showed that GPF is located at a mean distance of 14.27 mm and 14.73 mm on the right and left side respectively from the mid palatine raphe in our south indian population. Further the GPF was found to be located farther from MPR in males compared to females.
