Tooth decay, periodontitis and trauma are the common causes of missing teeth. Several treatment modalities are available for replacement of lost teeth, of which dental implants have been the most sought after in the recent years. Following tooth loss, bone resorption also occurs subsequently in most of the cases, thereby indicating the need of bone grafting before or at the time of implant placement. The present study was a questionnaire based survey undertaken with an aim to assess the knowledge and awareness of implants and bone grafts among the general population of Chennai city. The questionnaire was circulated by electronic media. Results showed that there was a greater percentage of the participants who were aware of dental implants and their source of information was mainly the internet. They considered implants a better replacement option than any other treatment. However, the majority of them were unaware of bone grafts, and were unwilling for autogenous grafts. Therefore, there is a need for spreading more awareness to remove the ignorance and fear from their minds.
