Knowledge, Attitude and Practice Survey On Endodontic Retreatment

Author: AISHUWARIYA.T , SINDHU RAMESH
Abstract: Introduction: Endodontic retreatment varies from primary endodontic therapy. Because of the fact that filling materials have to be removed from the root canals before the routine endodontic treatment may be performed. The treatment modalities that are available for removing filling materials from root canals also have clinical significance and should be selected carefully. In Endodontics, treatment decisions are based on several criteria that include medical and dental history, clinical examination, diagnostic testing, and radiographic interpretation. Endodontists, along with other dental practitioners, assimilate these data, and apply their knowledge of disease processes and therapeutics to formulate and present treatment plans to patients. Differences in treatment planning choices between specialist and general practitioner do exist and are dependent on educational background, clinical experience, attitudes and values of involved persons, and economic resources. A survey was conducted to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice among general dentists towards the management of endodontic failure cases. Materials and Methods: A survey was conducted among general practitioners and specialist belonging to field other than Endodontics. The survey questionnaire was distributed through electronic means and other means of communication. The results were obtained analyzed and interpreted. Results: Practical application of new treatment methods was found to be varied among the dentist. Conclusion: Majority of general dentists have adequate knowledge about retreatment. Nevertheless dentists are yet to start the application of these newer strategies towards the management of endodontic failures.
