Evaluation of Pulmonary function in children with development coordination disorder- Pilot study

Author: GANAPATHY SANKAR.U, MONISHA.R, S.SUBASH
Abstract: Children with DCD were having trouble with sequencing, organizing and coordinating motor events. They have poor perception of self and tend to avoid peer group interaction and physical activity. From the previous literatures, it has been documented that Parents of children with DCD were not aware of the importance of green land play. In the current study, we aimed to examine the pulmonary function in children with developmental coordination disorder. We also try to analyze, whether gender difference plays a major role in creating differences in pulmonary function among children with developmental coordination disorder. Twenty children were included in the study and they were of age group 5 to 10 years. Both boys and girls were included and after their enrolment developmental coordination disorder questionnaire was used to identify children with probable DCD and after analyzing the results of DCDQ, children underwent second line examination by our primary researcher with DSM-V criteria for categorizing children with DCD. Before enrolment, a well written informed consent form was distributed to their parents to get their wiliness in permitting their children to get participated in the study. Spirometer was used to evaluate forced vital capacity(FVC) and forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) were assessed and 800-meter run test was conducted to evaluate the cardiopulmonary fitness of children. Results declare that children with DCD have significant lower values of FVC and FEV1 and had a higher completion time in 800 meter run when compared to their age matched peer group children. DCD children were documented to have poor FEV1 value and 800 meter running time. Results of this pilot study suggest that children with DCD are expected to have poor pulmonary function and there is a need for a structured physical activity sessions.
