Early detection and Risk Management for Children with Developmental Coordination Disorder

Abstract: Children with developmental coordination disorder needs early identification and individualized rehabilitation protocols. They experience difficulty in motor skill execution and planning and we aimed to determine their difficulties with learning a new motor task and the associated impairments that inhibits their performance in academics and sports. We aimed to analyze the role of parents and teachers involved in early detection of children with developmental coordination disorder. DCD is a condition which is characterized by limitation in fine motor performance, gross motor performance, awkward posture, difficulty in balance and coordination. These characteristics limitations were acquired with the marked absence of any other medical and neurological diagnosis of disorders. However each children in unique in their own way and they have their own level of anticipatory motor control and response towards task demands. Children with developmental coordination disorder had varying capability in lodging their focus towards the feedback obtained in a way to respond to an adaptive movement strategies. Majority of children uses fixing strategy and uses vision for feedback to limit exhibiting the motor coordination defects. This impairment in execution of motor tasks will limit the child’s ability in performing well in sports and in due course of time as a result of repeated failures and continuous trial and error these children had poor perception of self ability and avoid physical activity. Long term self-isolation from peer group in play and academic task will further affects the psychological wellbeing of children and they were prone for secondary impairments like reduced strength and power. Teachers and parents can identify the child with DCD through their observational skills; they should be aware of the secondary consequences and must analyze the ways to avoid movement difficulties experienced by children. Therapist should facilitate continuous movement activities to enhance muscle strength and well being of children.
