Effect of Lycopene in Oral Disease - A Review

Author: G.NIVEDHITA , DR.EZHILARASAN, DR.M.P.BRUNDHA
Abstract: Oral diseases pose a major threat to many countries. It causes pain, discomfort, and sometimes even death. Some of the common oral diseases that can easily complicate life are gingivitis, periodontitis, oral leukoplakia, oral submucous fibrosis, and oral lichen planus. All of these are infections of the epithelial membrane which can progress to oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma when not treated at the right time. Lycopene is a natural source of carotenoid antioxidants. It has the ability to cure even chronic diseases like cancer. Many in vitro researches are there to support the antioxidant property of lycopene. It also has the ability to prevent carcinogenesis. Many articles were reviewed and this study has been done. Lycopene is a natural supplement that can be added to a daily diet to prevent various diseases. Lycopene has a lot of properties such as facilitating gap junction communicating stimulation of the immune system, endocrine mediated pathways, and cell cycle regulation. It also directly acts on growth factor signaling. Lycopene arrests the cell cycle at G0/G1 and S phase. Adhesion and migration of cancer cells are inhibited as lycopene inhibits phosphorylation of Akt, GSK 3B, and ERK 1/2 proteins. The future scope of this article is that it would create an interest to find the specific mechanism of how lycopene is efficient in prevention and cure for oral diseases. It would also create the need to find dietary substitutes for the prevention and cure of many diseases. Hence the review concludes that lycopene is an efficient preventive measure for oral diseases.
