Prevalence of Dental Fluorosis in Rural Population

Author: A.SHIVAPRIYA RAJE, L.KEERTHI SASANKA, DINESH PREMAVATHY
Abstract: Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of dental fluorosis among rural populations. Introduction: Dental Fluorosis occurs due to excess fluoride ingestion during tooth formation, the enamel fluorosis occurs during the formation of the teeth, at childhood. This forms a faint line or spots which are mild to enamel irregularities which is seen in more severe cases of fluorosis. The treatments available for this condition is limited, for the mildest form of fluorosis bleaching is recommended (TFI 1,2). Moderate dental fluorosis where the outer affected layer of enamel is abraded from the surface in an acidic environment. If the enamel is defective only treatment to improve the esthetics and function are Full Veneer Restorations. Materials and Methods: This is a Cross-sectional type of study conducted among the people residing in the rural area comprising 105 subjects. A total of 15 questions were framed based on knowledge about fluorosis, circulated through Google forms as an online survey. Result and conclusion: The results were collected, tabulated in excel software and analysed using IBM SPSS software V22 statistically and the data was represented in pie charts. Chi square test was used to analyse and compare the education level of common people and their knowledge on Dental Fluorosis. Around 62.9% of people were aware of dental fluorosis, prevalence, and the majority have reported positive answers. The survey concluded that prevalence of dental fluorosis in rural populations is much evident.
