Background: Evidences are inconsistent for effectiveness of carbetocin compared to oxytocin in prevention of primary postpartum hemorrhage (PPH).
Objective: To compare the effectiveness and safety of carbetocin with oxytocin in prevention of PPH. Indicators of effectiveness were specified
Patients and methods: Prospective observational study was conducted at Thumbay Hospital, Ajman, UAE. That enrolled 286 women undergoing caesarean section who had received either Carbetocin (CG, n=168) or Oxytocin (OG, n= 118). The groups were compared for blood loss, required additional uterotonic agents, rate of blood transfusion and side-effects
Results: In CG vs OG there was significantly lower percentage of women required additional uterotonic agents (10.2 %vs 29.7%), significantly lower median intraoperative blood loss and significantly lower rate of blood transfusion. There were no significant differences in most of other side-effects
Conclusion: Carbetocin is more effective for prevention of PPH compared to oxytocin
