Role of insulin dysfunction in development of dyslipidemia in type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2)

Author: ZAINAB MAJID ALI, WAFAA RAJI ALFATLAWI, MUHAMMED ABDUL-GABAR ALDABAGH
Abstract: Hyperglycemia as a result of insulin dysfunction leading to alteration in glucose homeostasis, one of these disorders is type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Both dyslipidemia and obesity are considered fundamental features of T2DM. Eighty-four participants of both gender (28 are control and 56 T2DM patients) were enrolled in this study. In each of collected clinical samples, Serum levels of insulin, FBS, C-peptide, lipid profile were measured, BMI and HOMA-IR were calculated of each subjects. Using of HOMA-IR, T2DM patients were sub divided to insulin resistance (IR) and insulin sensitive (IS) groups. Results of correlations showed that HOMA-IR, BMI, FBS as well as aging have significant relation with lipid profile disturbance. Both of HOMA-IR and BMI showed significant elevation in each of IS and IR groups compared to control group. Also, HOMA-IR showed significant elevation in IR compared to IS group. C-peptide revealed significant dropping in IS compared to IR group, while IR showed significant elevation compared to IS group. Regarding lipid profile, each of cholesterol, TG, LDL, VLDL, showed significant elevation in IS and IR groups compared to control group, while TG and VLDL showed significant dropping in IR compared to IS group. Current study concludes thatT2DM , insulin sensitivity, as well as aging have substantial role in development of dyslipidemia.
