Author: SHIFA JAWAHAR ALI, R. GAYATHRI, GIFRINA JAYARAJ, V. VISHNU PRIYA
Abstract: Aim and Introduction: Needlestick injury are the wounds caused by needles due to accidental puncture of skin often occurring while disposing needles. They occur frequently in healthcare settings and is dangerous. The needle could have been in contact with blood or other body fluids and increase the risk for transmission of blood borne infections among healthcare workers. Some of the risk factors are working at night shifts, insufficient work experience, young age and low knowledge level of bloodborne diseases. Using Safe instruments along with proper protection reduces the chance of injury. The aim of the study is to evaluate and assess the knowledge, awareness and perception on needlestick injury among healthcare practioners. Materials and methods: An online survey was conducted among healthcare workers to evaluate the knowledge, awareness and perception on needlestick injury among healthcare practitioners. The study population were the healthcare practitioners with a sample size of 100. The questionnaire consisted of 18 questions and was shared to healthcare practitioners using online survey platform. The study was conducted in the month of may, 2020. The statistics done using SPSS software, chi square test was done to check the association and a p value of 0.05 was said to be statistically significant. Results: From the survey, it was evident that 94% of the participants were aware about needlestick injury and it was also evident that both male and female participants were equally aware of the same(p-value>0.05).72% of the participants had reported to experience needlestick injury a few times, thus the survey has created an awareness on the measures to be taken if there was an accidental injury. Conclusion: From the results obtained, we can conclude that healthcare workers have moderate level of awareness about needlestick injury and it was also evident that both male and female participants were equally aware of the same. More awareness is required to prevent the risk of transmission of blood borne diseases among healthcare workers. The survey has created an awareness on the measures to be taken if there was an accidental injury.
