Abstract:

Introduction: Oral hygiene is the practice of maintaining the cleanliness of the oral cavity to be free of disease and other problems like bad breath by regularly brushing the teeth. Oral health is the reflection of general Health. Diabetes can aggravate periodontitis and it in turn negatively affects the glycemic control of diabetics.
Aim: The aim of the study is to determine the knowledge and awareness of diabetic patients about oral health and practices.
Materials and methods: A descriptive cross sectional survey was conducted from March to April 2020 among 87 diabetics through a self administered questionnaire. The responses were collected, tabulated in excel sheet and analysed using SPSS software. Chi square test was used to analyze the level of knowledge on oral hygiene and practices among diabetics with statistical significance of P< 0.05.
Results: 40.2% responded that oral health is as important as general health. Majority of study participants about 95.4% answered that they use toothbrushes and 48.3% responded that tooth pain was the reason for their dental visit.
Conclusion: From the above study,it is concluded that the oral hygiene knowledge among diabetics was moderate.The lack of oral hygiene knowledge and practices could possibly be one of the roots of the ailment.
