Knowledge and Awareness on The Effects of Smoking on Oral Health Among General Population

Author: KAUSHIK VISHNU RAJKUMAR, ARCHANA SANTHANAM, MRS.S. SANGEETHA
Abstract: Introduction: Smoking is a practice in which a substance is burnt and the resulting smoke breathed into the lungs and is absorbed into the bloodstream. In case of cigarette smoking the substance is contained in a mixture of aerosol particles, which includes the pharmaceutical active alkaloid nicotine.Chemicals in tobacco products affect saliva flow in the mouth, making it easier for oral bacteria to stick to teeth and gums. Smokers are three to six times more likely to develop gum disease or periodontal disease, which can attack roots and cause teeth to fall out. Smoking generally causes a negative effect on the health of an individual because inhalation of smoke poses challenges to various physiological processes. Aim: The aim of this study is to assess the knowledge and awareness of the effects of smoking on oral health among general population Materials and methods: A descriptive cross sectional survey was conducted among 104 participants through a self administered questionnaire. The responses were collected, tabulated in excel sheet and analysed using SPSS software. Chi square test was used to analyze the level of knowledge on smoking among patients with statistical significance of P< 0.05. Results: 40.2% have tried smoking or experimented with cigarette smoking. 41.18% of the population have tried to stop smoking. 95.1% of the population know that smokers are at a higher risk of cancer development. Conclusion: In our study, the majority of the participants had good knowledge on the effects of smoking. Males were more aware of the effects of smoking compared to females.
