Awareness On Gingivitis Among College Students - A Survey

Author: ANUSHYA.P , VISHNU PRIYA.V, JOTHI PRIYA. A, GAYATHRI.R
Abstract: Oral health plays a crucial role in maintaining general health. The importance of oral health remains neglected and ignored because most are unaware of the relationship between oral health and systemic diseases. Therefore, the aim of this study is to assess the oral health awareness and knowledge about gingivitis among the college students. Self administered questionnaires were designed based on the knowledge, attitudes and perception of college students towards gingivitis. The questionnaire was distributed through an online google forms link. The study population included 100 college students. The questions were carefully studied and therefore the corresponding answers were marked by the participants. The data was collected and statistically analysed. In this present study, 45.45% male and 54.55% female participated. 98.99% of students have the habit of brushing their teeth daily. Only 70.71% of students responded correctly as “Pink is the normal color of Gingiva”. 47.47% of students responded that they would visit a dentist in case of Gingival bleeding. 68.69% of students responded that smoking tobacco results in increased Gum bleeding. Our study demonstrated that college students had good knowledge and information about oral health; however their knowledge and awareness regarding gingivitis and its effect on general health is limited. Awareness camps on maintaining oral health may be conducted to benefit the society to a larger extent.
