Author: ANANYA. R, DR. BALAJI GANESH S, MDS, DR. EZHILARASAN
Abstract: Toothpaste is a paste or gel used to preserve and enhance oral health and appearance with a toothbrush. Since their introduction many thousand years ago, formulations of toothpaste have developed considerably from suspensions of broken egg shells or ashes to complicated formulations with sometimes over 20 ingredients. Compounds to fight dental caries, gum disease, malodor, calculus, erosion and hypersensitivity to dentin may be among these. In addition, toothpastes include abrasives for cleaning and whitening teeth, flavors for breath freshening purposes, and dyes for better visual appeal. Available toothpastes are those formulated to ensure maximum bioavailability of their active ingredients. The aim of the study was to assess the knowledge and awareness about the importance of toothpaste among the general population. A descriptive, cross sectional study was conducted among 300 general population. A questionnaire was prepared using google forms based on the awareness of toothpastes. It was then circulated to the Chennai population of age groups above 10-12 years using applications such as Whatsapp and Gmail. The questionnaire contained 10 basic questions. The results were then analysed and calculated using IBM SPSS statistics editor. Based on the analysis it can be concluded that 88.9%% of the general population were aware of uses of toothpaste.
