Knowledge and awareness of fluoridated toothpaste among parents

Abstract:
|
Introduction: Tooth decay, also known as dental caries or cavities, is deterioration of teeth caused by bacteria which forms acids. The toothpaste and toothbrush are effective tools used in the oral hygiene aid. The use of fluoride compounds is regarded to be the most effective way of preventing caries. The aim of the study is to analyse the knowledge and awareness on fluoridated toothpaste among parents.
Materials and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted among 201 parents from March to April 2020 to access their knowledge and attitude toward fluoridated toothpaste. Self administered questionnaire of close ended questions was prepared and it was distributed among parents through the online survey google forms. The responses were collected,tabulated in excel sheet and analysed using SPSS software. Chi square test was used to compare gender and knowledge on fluoridated toothpaste with statistical significance of p<0.05.
Results: In the present study 87.5% were aware about the fluoridated toothpaste, 76.5% recommended to use fluoridated toothpaste and 80% believed that fluoride is effective in preventing caries.
Conclusion: The study concludes that the parents have good knowledge and attitude towards the fluoridated toothpaste.
