Introduction- Stem cells are undifferentiated cells characterised by the ability to proliferate [self renewal], as a rule emerge from a solitary cell [clonal], and separate into various sorts of cells and tissue [strong]. The metabolic programming of stem cells represents a fine harmony between the inherent needs of a cell state and the imperatives forced by outward conditions. Stem cells of the dental pulp are a populace of postnatal stem cells with multi-lineage separation potential. Cancer stem cells [CSCs] have been distinguished from oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma. The aim of this study is to assess the knowledge and attitude of stem cells among undergraduate dental institutions.
Materials and Methods- A descriptive cross sectional survey was conducted among 253 dental students through a self-administered questionnaire. The study was conducted from March to April 2020 to assess the awareness of stem cells among undergraduate dental students. The responses were collected, tabulated in excel sheet and analysed using SPSS software. Chi square test was used to analyze the level of knowledge on stem cells and dental students with statistical significance of P< 0.05.
Results- 72.3% of the participants were willing to collect dental stem cells. 47% of the participants were aware of the extraction of dental stem cells from different sources. Pearson chi square test showed P value= 0.000 (<0.05) statistically significant. 51% of the participants were aware of the application of dental stem cells.
Conclusion- Dental undergraduate students had good knowledge and awareness regarding dental stem cells.
