Introduction: Stem cells are defined as endogenic unspecialised cells which are capable of both self renewal for long periods and multilineage differentiation, contributing to regeneration of specific tissues. Stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth have been in use for a long time. However, still it is not known whether SHED can generate a dental pulp like tissues in Vivo. The aim of the study is to assess the knowledge and awareness of stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth among dental students.
Materials and Methods: A descriptive cross sectional survey was conducted among 101 dental students through a self administered questionnaire from March - April 2020. The responses were collected, tabulated in excel sheet and analysed using SPSS software. Chi square test was used to analyze the level of knowledge on dental stem cells among dental students with statistical significance of P< 0.05.
Results: 50.5% of the study population were aware of stem cells from SHED and 48.5% of the study population knew that stem cells are very beneficial.
Conclusion: This study concludes that dental students had average knowledge and awareness on stem cells. Knowledge about the advances in applications, storage, banking, and guidelines related to dental stem cells should be created.
