Knowledge, awareness and perception towards self care practices and oral health care by adolescent population in chennai - a questionnaire survey

Abstract: Aim and Introduction : It is needless to state that health and hygiene go hand in hand and of the various categories of hygiene, oral hygiene has a colossal contribution to positive health for any individual. Zealous and correct lifestyle characteristics are related to high standards of oral hygiene, and good habits must be inculcated in the early years of one's life. The aim of this survey was to create awareness and to know the perception of self care practices and oral health care among the adolescent population . Materials and method : Self administered questionnaire was designed based on awareness .The questionnaire was distributed through a google docs link to the study population which included adolescents.The participants were explained about the purpose of study in detail . The current study was a pilot study involving 100 adolescents to evaluate their oral health care practices.This survey was conducted in the month of May 2020. Once after the results of the survey were obtained, bar graphs and pie charts with a frequency table were prepared.The statistics done using SPSS software, chi square test was done to check the association and a p value of 0.05 was said to be statistically significant. Results and Discussion : Majority of adolescents practice several ways to maintain good oral hygiene like using neem , clove , mouth washes , interdental aids and they were also aware about oral health care . Conclusion : Although over half of the adolescent population rated their oral health status as excellent, it is apparent from the study that their oral self-care and dental attendance is inadequate.
