Assessment of awareness and need for interceptive treatment in children reporting for regular dental checkup- Institutional study

Author: HARRITA.S , ARAVIND KUMAR S, SENTHIL MURUGAN P
Abstract: The purpose of the interceptive orthodontic treatment is to eliminate or reduce the need for treatment in the permanent dentition. The major advantage of such treatments may also be that it is technically simple and relatively cost effective. The aim of the study is to assess the need of interceptive treatment among children who visit the hospital for regular dental checkup. A retrospective study done under university setup, the case records were reviewed from the record management system of the hospital, out of which 3279 case sheets satisfied the inclusion criteria of this study. Collected data was compiled and statistically analysed using SPSS. From this study it can be interpreted that, Within the limitations, age group of 8 to 13 years, Out of 3279 children 240 children required interceptive orthodontic treatment. Patients with class II malocclusion report to the clinic more than patients with class III malocclusion since the features of class II malocclusion such as proclination of upper anteriors are more prominent and easy to identify, however Patients with Class III malocclusion seldom or never visit the dentist because the features are not easily identified by the patients and are easily overlooked by the dentists except orthodontist. Patients of the age group of 8-9 years rarely report to the hospital for orthodontic treatment and most patients reported at the age of 12-13 years. This shows that the patients are not aware about early interceptive treatments, Since so many children require interceptive intervention, it is important to create awareness among patients and regular dentists to identify and treat malocclusions in the earliest because interceptive orthodontics plays an important role in reducing the development of future complex malocclusions.
