Author: KAVIYASELVI GURUMURTHY, DR. L. KEERTHI SASANKA, DR. K. R. DON3, NABEEL AHMED
Abstract: The golden proportion is a geometric potential which helps in enhancing the smile of an individual and acting as a guide to anterior restorations. The value of the golden proportion is 1:1.618 and it represents the ratio of the larger and smaller lengths of the tooth. Enhancing the external appearance and facial characteristics of an individual generally increases the confidence level of teenagers and enhances their communication skills which is an essential quality required by all individuals. The main aim of this study is to understand the knowledge and awareness of the golden proportion among dental students and the need to spread information on the same. The present study consisted of a survey questionnaire which included 10 questions on the golden proportion which was circulated via an online google forms link and the results were analysed using the SPSS software with a version of 22 and the statistical test used was descriptive statistics. It was found that a majority of the dental students were aware of the term golden proportion and its value. A significant number of individuals believed that this proportion varied with size, shape of tooth, contour of face and other factors such as age of the individual. The present study concluded that there was a need to spread awareness and knowledge on the golden proportion to improve the field of aesthetics in dentistry.
