Abstract:
|
The genus Cissus belong to the family Vitaceae. It has 13 genera and 800 species in the world. It’s found in tropical regions of India, Srilanka, Africa, Arabia, and South Asia. In India 8 genera and 63 species have been distributed and identified. The Cissus species are mostly climber with tendril and shrub and highly medicinal valuable. It contains several secondary metabolites like an ascorbic acid, flavonoid, terpenoids based on its phytochemical investigations. The most pharmaceuticals valuable species such as Cissus quadrangularis, Cissus repens, Cissus rependa, Cissus discolor, Cissus arnottiana, Cissus sicyoides,Cissus populnea, Cissus cornifolia,Cissus verticillata, Cissus aralioides, Cissus quadrangularis. Most of the species of genus Cissus were documented in Ayurveda system for its medicinal uses such as diarrhea, dysentery, kapham and Brest cancer. The roots and stems of Cissus repens as used for snake bites, rheumatic pain, and carbuncles in folk medicine and the stems are also applied to the treatment of nephritis, long-term coughs, and diarrhea. The Cissus rependa is a perennial climber, leaf is used popularly as traditional vegetable and its leaf extract possess hepatoprotective activities. Cissus discolor is commonly known as “Sangharhmai”. It’s used to treat stomach troubles and also applied to itching sores, the leaves are used to anti diabetic and anti-septic. Cissus arnottiana is an erect woody shrub, commonly known as “Nanaminukki” in Tamil and “Nelagummadi” in Telugu the plant reported as bruised roots are applied for rheumatic swellings and also these plants are possess antibacterial, antioxidant, anti -inflammatory, anti-viral activity.
