Hypertension is the most common cardiovascular disease, particularly in middle age. Calcium channel blockers (CCBs)
have been found to be effective in reducing blood pressure. Most adverse reactions reported during therapy with amlodipine
were of mild or moderate severity. The aim of the study was to determine nature of adverse drug reactions of amlodipine
5mg tablet amongst hypertensive patients with special reference to pedal edema. Total 20 hypertensive patients, 10 old hypertensive
patients taking Amlodipine since last 1 year and 10 newly diagnosed hypertensive patients started with Amlodipine
5mg tablet were included in the study. There was reduction in diastolic and systolic blood pressure in both the
groups. The most common adverse events found in the hypertensive patients include headache, fatigueness, giddiness and
pedal edema. Serum electrolytes, urea and creatinine parameters were not significantly altered by amlodipine therapy in any
patients. There was no any serious adverse event observed in hypertensive patients due to 5mg amlodipine. The plasma amlodipine
level was found to be towards higher side for one patient who developed pedal edema.
