Identification and Quantification of ?- Sitosterol using HPTLC and confirmation by GC-MS from Capparis moonii Wight

Author: NUTAN MALPATHAK, PALLAVI L. YADAV
Abstract: Capparis moonii Wight (Waghati)) is an endemic plant belonging to Western Ghats (India) traditionally used for curing a variety of ailments in India. There are no reports of quantification of ?- Sitosterol from stem part of this plant. Hence a High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography method has been developed for quantification of this marker compound. ?-Sitosterol is reported to have number of bioactivities and most promising is cytotoxicity. A validated protocol for isolation of ?- Sitosterol from Capparis moonii Wight was developed. ?-Sitosterol was quantified from ethanolic extract using the solvent system of Toluene: Ethyl acetate (7: 3, v/v). This simple and precise method gave good resolution for ?- Sitosterol from other constituents of extract. Fraction 2 was confirmed with presence of ?-Sitosterol by GC-MS analysis. A validated protocol for isolation of ?- Sitosterol from Capparis moonii Wight was developed.
Keyword: Capparis moonii; HPTLC; ?- Sitosterol.
