Schumannianthus virgatus (Roxb.)Rolfe, (Marantaceae) is a medicinal herb growing in the low lands of the Western Ghats. The rhizome extract of the plant is used by the “Kani” tribe of Kerala to treat jaundice. A detailed research is needed to prove its therapeutic claim. The present study is aimed to scientifically evaluate the antihepatotoxic property of ethanolic extract of the rhizome of Schumannianthus virgatus (SV) against paracetamol induced liver damage in Wistar rats. Paracetamol induced hepatic damage was manifested by a significant increase in the activities of marker enzymes AST, ALT, ALP and MDA levels in liver (P < 0.01), and by a significant decrease in activity of catalase and GSH levels in liver (P < 0.01). Pretreatment of rats with SV reversed these altered parameters to normal values. The biochemical results were supplemented by histopathological examination of liver sections. The plant extract exhibited powerful free radical scavenging, especially against DPPH and nitric oxide. Results of this study showed that administration of SV offered therapeutic potential for the treatment of hepatotoxicity induced by APAP via regulation of endogenous antioxidant system in liver.
