Abstract: High fat diet is one of the causes of obesity. Saponins are surface active compounds which can inhibit the absorption of lipid in the intestine. This study aimed to observe saponin activity of andong leave as antiobesity in rats. This study used 24 male Wistar rats, then divided into 2 groups: six rats were normal with a standard diet of laboratory and 18 rats were obese induced by high-fat diet. Then were divided into 3 groups high-fat diet, high-fat diet plus a saponin extract 100 mg / kg and high-fat diet plus gemfibrozil 100 mg / kg. Saponin and gemfibrozil treatment were done for 30 d. Changes in body weight, Lee Obesity Index, circumference waist, daily diet intake, and number of fecal were measured regulary the experimental periode. In vivo fecal fat and cholesterol were examined and the concentrations of lipid profile in serum. Differences in mean levels between groups were tested by one-way ANOVA test. The results showed a decrease in body weight, Lee Obesity Index, waist circumference, daily diet intake, and blood serum total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and an increase in serum HDL cholesterol, daily fecal weight, total cholesterol and fat in the feces significantly (p < 0.05) in the treatment with saponin extract of andong leaves than high-fat groups. Based on these results were be concluded that the andong leave saponin have activity as antiobesity and hypolipidemic.
