Factors Associated with Malnutrition in the Elderly

Abstract:

Introduction: Malnutrition is a clinical disorder and a very common risk factor for the elderly, which was considered
as part of the natural process of aging but was, in fact, known to be preventative and therapeutic, and its early
diagnosis would allow for timely intervention. To make Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the
factors affecting the nutritional status of the elderly in order to help design and implement appropriate intervention
by the researcher.
Methods: All studies carried out during the years 2017-2005 using the keywords of nutrition in the elderly,
malnutrition in aging, nutrition in the elderly, and meta-analysis of data from the country and abroad include mag
iran, SID, medlib, CINHAL, Pubmed, Scopus, and data were analyzed using meta-analytic method.
Results: From 360 articles, 38 studies were conducted to investigate the factors related to malnutrition in the elderly.
The most important factors of malnutrition were classified according to their prevalence in psychological, physical,
economic, social and demographic areas.
Conclusion: Considering the prevalence of nutritional disorders and the risk factors that can be addressed, especially
in the elderly living in care facilities, it is suggested that the researcher should be encouraged to activate
psychological, educational, medical and cultural services.
