ABSTRACT
Cosmetic products are made up of mixtures of ingredients and used by all age groups to maintain their skin etc. Various adverse effects may occur in the form of acute toxicity, percutaneous absorption, skin irritation, eye irritation, skin sensitization and photosensitization, subchronic toxicity, mutagenicity/genotoxicity, and phototoxicity/photoirritation. The safety assessment of a cosmetic product clearly depends upon how it is used, since it determines the amount of substance which may be ingested, inhaled, or absorbed through the skin or mucous membranes. Concentration of ingredients used in the different products is also important. By adopting proper methodologies and techniques risk factors of ingredients incorporated in cosmetics can be determined and managed at safety level. This review will enable the industrialist, cosmeticians, pharmacist and researchers to carry out more cosmetic toxicity studies, which would help to explore the myth of cosmetics in front of consumers that will be beneficial in terms of human health.
