Professional capability in nursing is seen as essential to patients' safety and satisfaction and the quality of care.
Capability is a broad concept and is not limited to one domain, but includes a wide range of individual abilities and
characteristics. Capability is the combination of knowledge, skills, personal qualities and understanding employed in
an effective manner in not only predictable specialist contexts, but in unexpected and unstable circumstances. The
present study aims to define and identify the dimensions of and the tools which are used to measure professional
capability in nursing. The study is a systematic review of the literature according to PRISMA guidelines. The entire
articles on professional capability in nursing published in the past fifty years, from 1967 to 2017, were studied.
Overall, 11 databases and 758 articles were used. Dimensions of professional capability in nursing as identified in the
present study include: individualized-based capability, Clinical judgment-based capability, research-based capability,
inter-professional-based capability, clinical and practical-based capability, and Ethical practice-based capability. In
nursing, capability is not limited to one dimension, but is a broad concept with a variety of aspects. Considering the
results of the present study and the fact that the concept of professional capability in nursing has been the subject of
few studies, there is need for more research in different countries for a more accurate definition, identification of the
various aspects, and evaluation of professional capability.
