DESIGN AND FORMULATION OF CAPECITABINE CONTROLLED RELEASE TABLET TO TREAT CANCER.

Author: HARSH VARIA, DR. RAJESH K.S
Abstract: The purpose of present research work was to design and formulation of capecitabine controlled release dosage form to achieve a prolonged therapeutic effect with constantly releasing medication over an extended period of time by administration of a single dose. The present study aims to treat colorectal cancer with improved patient compliance. The selected drug, capecitabine is designed to release therapeutic concentration over a long period of time and termed as controlled release dosage form. Capecitabine is readily absorbed from gastrointestinal tract. Hence controlled release delivers maximum drug in colon lowering dosing frequency. Procured drug was identified as Capecitabine by solubility study, melting point study, FTIR study and calibration curve development. Controlled release tablets of capecitabine were prepared using natural polymers like carrageenan gum, locust bean gum and gum rosin by Wet Granulation Method on basis of trial and error method. All pre-compression parameters like, bulk and tapped density, angle of repose, carr’s index, hausner’s ratio were calculated and shown passable flow property. All post-compression parameters like, thickness, hardness, friability, %drug content, in-vitro dissolution study, microbial limit test and stability study were checked and shown satisfactory results. Controlled release tablets of capecitabine for colorectal cancer were successfully prepared and evaluated by using natural polymers on drug release.
