Universal Adhesives: A Literature Review

Author: ARMAGHAN NAGHILI, SEPEHR TALEBI, HESAM AMIRIFAR
Abstract: This study aimed to do a review on universal adhesives to assess their compositions, properties and methods of application. Universal adhesives were introduced to the dental market in 2011 and gained high popularity among dentists due to their unique properties such as the potential to bond to different substrates and fewer technical steps than the previous generations of bonding agents. These adhesives can bond to dental, ceramic, composite and metal substrates with different etching modes; thus, they are also referred to as “multi-mode” adhesives. Several studies have evaluated universal adhesives in different fields and have reported results comparable to those of previous generations of bonding agents. However, data are limited to confidently assess universal adhesives compared to other types. This study aimed to do a review on the available literature published in PubMed and Science Direct databases regarding universal adhesives since 2011 with supporting previous literature.
