The article analyzes sleep disturbances, their causes, the specifics of their interdisciplinary diagnosis with the help of
representatives of various professions and methods, and the features of psychological care for patients with sleep
disorders. Human behavior is regulated by two components – periods of activity and rest. During the period of activity,
the individual learns and implements congenital and acquired behaviors. At rest, a person is in one of three states: calm
wakefulness, ordinary (slow wave) and paradoxical sleep. In cases of sleep disturbance, normal life and work capacity
of a person suffers. Insomnia is a clinical syndrome characterized by the presence of repetitive disorders of initiation,
duration, consolidation or sleep quality. The paper considers different insomnia classification. Diagnosis of insomnia is
based on interdisciplinary principles, among which scales for assessing the severity of sleep disorders are of particular
importance. The article gives the information on basic scales which help assess sleep disturbances (Insomnia Severity
Index (ISI), Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI)), Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS), Berlin Questionnaire (BQ), Adolescent
Sleep Hygiene Scale (ASHSr) etc.).
