Potential Toxic Effects of Rind Extract from Citrullus lanatus and Cucumis melo towards Bacteria

Author: NUR HASBULLAH, S. S. HASAN, SHARIFAH AMINAH SYED MOHAMAD
Abstract: The rind of melons is found to be one of the most abundant forms of fruit waste which bring massive contribution towards Malaysia’s waste accumulation. Being added by its rich nutritional value, this fruit waste can be converted into another potential substitute. Instead of discarding the rind, it would be beneficial to test their potential for antibacterial effects towards Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine the toxic effects of Citrullus lanatus (watermelon) and Cucumis melo (honeydew) rind by using standard disc diffusion method against S. aureus, B. subtilis, E. coli and Salmonella sp. These strains were exposed to different concentrations of rinds extract ranges from 25% to 100% of extraction. Results indicated that watermelon rind extract has high inhibitory effects towards S. aureus as compared to B.subtilis. However, it did not show any effects towards E. coli and Salmonella sp. On the other hand, honeydew rind extract only showed inhibitory effects towards B. subtilis and no effects on S. aureus, E. coli, as well as Salmonella sp. These findings suggest that rind extract from C. lanatus and C. melo can be used as potential antibacterial control systems towards Gram-positive bacteria.
