Herbal drugs such as extracts and isolated phytoconstituents offer many opportunities to develop new medicines due to their chemical diversity for both to prevent and cure. Up to 80% of the population dependent on herbal medicines in countries like India, China, South East Asian Countries and countries in African continent. Need to explore more systemic research to assure effectiveness and safety. From the ancient system of medication, Senna alata is one of the important medicinal plant with prominent biological activities. Based on emerging evidences, it suggests that leaf of Senna alata is having the biological activities against dermatological infections and gastrointestinal related disorders. So there is a need to study about the standardization of presence of the phytoconstituents in the extracts. Standardization of phytoconstituents will help to assure effectiveness and safety of herbal medicines which is a need by current drug approval authorities across the world. This prompted us to present a review on standardization of the presence of active constituents of Senna alata plant extract by various analytical techniques. The advantages and applications of various separation techniques were compiled.
