INDICATORS OF THE ANDROGENIC FUNCTION OF THE TESTES ASSOCIATED WITH THE Y-CHROMOSOME IN LABORATORY MICE

Author: L.V. OSADCHUK, O.I. SEBEZHKO, SHMAKOVA, A.V. OSADCHUK
Abstract: The interest in studying a role of the Y-chromosome in the reproductive traits’ control has recently grown; but still, a role of the Y-chromosome in the testicular steroidogenesis control remains poorly understood. The study aimed to study an association between the Y-chromosome and hormonal indicators of the testicular function using inbred mice strains and in their reciprocal hybrids. In adult male mice of two inbred strains BALB/cLac, DD/He and their reciprocal hybrids of the first generation BALB/cLac*DD/He, DD/He*BALB/cLac (the mother's genotype was listed first), serum levels and testicular contents of testosterone have been determined with or without stimulation of testicular steroidogenesis by injections of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). The basal level of testosterone and its testicular content have not significantly differed among the males of the four genotypes. The acute hCG injections have identified clear genotypic differences between the BALB/cLac and DD/He strains, and between the BALB/cLac*DD/He and DD/He* BALB/cLac hybrids, which are the carriers of different Y-chromosomes. The maximum stimulated testosterone levels have been observed in DD/He and BALB/cLac*DD/He males (carriers of the same Y-chromosome) in comparison with males of other pair of genotypes BALB/cLac and the DD/He*BALB/cLac. The BALB/cLac and the DD/He*BALB/cLac males (carriers of the same Y-chromosome) have been characterized by the maximum stimulated testicular testosterone contents in comparison with males of other pair of genotypes DD/He and BALB/cLac*DD/He. Thus, the data obtained suggest that in mice, circulating and intratesticular testosterone levels may be related to the Y-chromosome and, in particular, with the Y-specific distribution of testosterone between the testes and peripheral circulation.
