Evaluation of the Static Frictional Resistance of Gold- Plated Orthodontic Brackets/Wires Combination (In-Vitro Comparative Study)

Author: MOHAMMED NAHIDH, ABEER BASIM, ATAA GHAZI
Abstract: Aims: This study aimed to evaluate the static frictional force of gold-plated orthodontic brackets-wires combinations in comparison with the ordinary brackets and archwires in dry condition. Materials and methods: The straight portions of 0.014'' Nickel-Titanium and 0.019''×0.025'' stainless steel both ordinary and gold-plated archwires were tested for static friction on stainless steel and gold-plated orthodontic brackets using Instron testing machine. Surface roughness and surface topography of each archwire were determined by atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy respectively. The mean values of the frictional force and average roughness were compared using independent sample t-test. Results: Both types of gold-plated archwires behave similarly with both types of brackets recording significantly higher frictional force than ordinary archwires of the same gauge, moreover, the types of brackets had a significant effect on the static frictional force of ordinary 0.019''×0.025'' stainless steel archwire only. The average roughness of as received gold-plated archwires was significantly higher than conventional ones. Conclusions: The gold-plated archwires demonstrated significantly higher roughness and frictional resistance values in comparison with the ordinary archwires of equivalent gauge and with both types of brackets. Different types of brackets affect the friction of ordinary 0.019''×0.025'' stainless steel archwire unlike the other archwires. Key words: Gold-plated brackets, archwires, static friction.
Keyword: Gold-plated brackets, archwires, static friction.
