Evaluating Knowledge and Attitude of Nurses about Disaster Preparedness and Response Phase

Abstract: Introduction: Natural disasters have caused about three million deaths and 800 million injuries. Considering the key role of nurses in the health system, they should be prepared to respond effectively to disasters. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge and attitude of nurses working in health and educational centers in Rasht regarding preparedness to disaster response phase. Methods: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted using researcher-designed questionnaire to obtain data from 384 nurses working in health and educational centers of Rasht in 2016-2017. Findings: The results of the study showed that average knowledge and attitude score was 6.6 ± 1.9 and 129.1 ± 14.6 respectively. Variables including type of hospital, working experience, job position, presence of disaster committee in hospital, and availability of vital items for disaster situations was considered significant for knowledge, and variables including type of hospital and availability of vital items case for disasters was considered significant for attitude. Conclusion: This study identifies the need to encourage nurses to acquire more knowledge, enhance their attitudes with regard to preparedness to disaster response phase. Educational interventions including continued education and conducting special disaster maneuvers are suggested to improve the level of preparedness
