This research compared the effect of ketamine and remifentanil on blood glucose level during surgery. We gathered 120 patients who scheduled for elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy then participants were randomized into three groups; ketamine, remifentanil, and no intervention groups. We collected samples for blood sugar from each patient one before induction of anesthesia, after induction of anesthesia, and one hour after operation. Data analyzed by SPSS 18.0 and a p-value<0.05 considered as significance level. The mean age of our patients was 46.4±10.2 and 36.7% (44 cases) of them were men. Blood sugar significantly decreased during study in ketamine and remifentanil group (p<0.001) but there was no significant difference between intervention groups (p>0.05). Also blood sugar significantly increased during study in no intervention group (p<0.0001). Blood sugars after induction and after operation in control group were significantly higher than intervention groups (p<0.019). In conclusion current study showed that remifentanil and ketamine infusions prevent the increase of blood sugar. No side effect was observed.
