Chlorophytum comosum (Thunb.) Jacques (Liliaceae) is a common plant used for ornamental purposes. It has been claimed to treat bronchitis, cough, fractures; and burns. Steroidal saponins are the major phytoconstituents of tubers. An attempt was made to standardize the root tubers on the basis of WHO guidelines. The extracts of tubers contained alkaloids, saponins, steroids and carbohydrates. The total phenolic content was estimated by Folin-Ciocalteau method. The HPTLC fingerprint of butanolic extract of tubers was developed. Butanolic extract was found to have activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.
